Struck by the fact that the average Swede knows more about, say, the Kurds than the Lapps of Lapland, Jarl made this portrait of a 12-year-old Lapp boy. City-bred youngsters in the same age bracket can't help but marvel at the sense of community and connection to Nature that their Lapp contemporaries experience. Jåvna is 12 years old and goes to the Lapp school in Kiruna, Sweden's northernmost city. And al-though dust from Chernobyl has sifted down over all of Norrland, al-though time has passed, Jåvna has only one dream. He's going to keep reindeer. In the year 2000.
